Just like zirconium, hafnium scrap (Hf Scrap) and hafnium alloy scrap (Hf Alloy Scrap) are created from a zirconium and hafnium metal which is produced from zircon sand. Typically both metals, prior to being scrap metal, are in the ore in a 50:1 ratio of zirconium to hafnium. However, hafnium scrap and hafnium alloy scrap is a very high temperature scrap metal and high temperature alloy scrap which makes the recycling process even more useful.
Being the 45th most abundant element in the Earths crust one would think that there would be no reason to recycle hafnium scrap and hafnium alloy scrap but there is. Hafnium scrap and hafnium alloy scrap is useful as a control rod material in nuclear reactors and as a superalloy. When recycled as a superalloy, hafnium scrap and hafnium alloy scrap can act as a scavenger metal in the retrieval of oxygen and nitrogen. When thinking of collecting oxygen it is easy to understand why it is important to recycle hafnium scrap and hafnium alloy scrap.
Today there is a global trade in the buying and selling of high temperature scrap alloys in which Monico Alloys plays an active part. The forecasts are that the volume for both buyers and sellers will continue to increase.
